We asked and you told us! Last year, the LOMA Society of the Twin Cities surveyed its membership. Many of you told us that an informal social event would be appreciated. We've planned an event on March 6th to give you the opportunity to mix with you local industry colleagues and get to know a little more about what they do.

There will be free appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages; alcoholic beverages available for purchase.

Cost: FREE for members as a thank you.

Nonmember admission is $5.00 so bring a friend! Nonmembers can pay an extra $5.00 with their registration to gain 2011-2012 membership. This is a savings of $5.00.

Membership Survey Recap

Last year we took the first membership survey in 10 years. Long overdue, wouldn't you agree? There were a total of 89 responses. Half of responders said they attend one or more events per year. Half read the quarterly newsletter and 71% read emails from LOMA Twin Cities. We learned that people attend for networking, social and educational reasons. Overwhelmingly, the number one reason people don't attend events is because they are too busy.

How Can We Improve

One way we can improve is by including topics that pertain to specific roles. In the future we will attempt to better understand what the breakdown of occupations is within the membership.

We had a number of members state that they were looking for more informal, social opportunities. We are responding with a member happy hour coming up soon.

Another suggestion is that we ought to better engage leadership. One way that can happen is is through your active participation. We encourage you to invite your manager or mentor to attend a LOMA event with you.

Thank you to our members for responding to the survey. As always, if you have suggestions for the LOMA Society of the Twin Cities, you don't have to wait for the next survey. LOMA Society Members Walk in Holidazzle Parade

On the evening of Thursday, December 8, 6 LOMA Society members and their family members marched in the Holidazzle Parade for the benefit of the Emergency Foodshelf Network.

Holidazzle celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2011 by bringing its lights, music and holiday cheer to the Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis. The Emergency Foodshelf Network parade group set off the parade with characters dressed in railroad engineer costumes collecting money and food donations from the warmly bundled crowds that lined the Mall.

This marks the 11th year our Society has taken part in the event. The donations collected helped to feed many needy citizens of the Twin Cities area. We thank those who participated in this evening of fun and fellowship. We hope you'll be able to join us next year.

President's Summary for 2011, Dixie Carroll - President

In the role as President, I presided over meetings with the Society's Board of Directors and oversaw their activities. And with the Board, we worked on activities for the benefit of the Society's members and planned events for the members' benefit.

Scholarship Committee

The Scholarship committee awarded a $500 scholarship to the daughter of a Society member. The Society member and the student were both required to submit essays. The essays were reviewed by the Committee to select the recipient.

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee conducted an on-line survey of the Twin Cities membership. Valuable feedback was obtained concerning what the membership is looking for from the Society and how the Society can improve its programming and services.

Communications Committee

The Communications Committee published three newsletters for its membership, providing valuable informationon Society matters and upocoming events.

Program Committee

The Program Committee organized and delivered outstanding events for the membership in 2011. The Winter Dinner Meettingin March was held at Securian Financial Group, Inc with the guest speakers presentation on "Forecast for 2011". In May, the Society conducted a half day seminar at Catholic United Financial. Presenters spoke on topics ranging from regulatory issues that affect the life insurance industry to cultural and individual differences in the workplace. In October, the Fall Dinner Meeting was our traditional celebration and recognition of those members who had earned LOMA designations over the past year. Highlights of that meeting is included a guest speaker from Ameriprise Financial, Inc. who spoke on fraud investigations in the financial services industry and awarding of the Society's scholarship.

Charitable Activities

Throughout the year, the Society supported several charitable organizations. At the dinner meetings and seminar, members were encouraged to support community charities. In 2011, the charities benefiting from the members' generosity included the Emergency Food Shelf Network, Cathoic United Financial Foundation and the Foundation Fighting Blindness.

Fall 2011 Meeting Recap

The LOMA Society of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul Spring Seminar held its Fall Recognition Dinner for new LOMA designees on October 4th at JAX Cafe in Minneapolis.

Following dinner, President Dixie Carroll welcomed the attendees. A brief business meeting was also conducted, including the election of the officers and board of directors for 2012.

The evening's keynote speaker was Tim Dodds, CFP, MBA, Vice President Fraud Risk Management & Investigations at Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. Tim's talk focused on fraud investigations within the financial services industry. He began with an overview of what defines fraud and the impact of fraud across the globe.

Tim covered the following topics during his presentation:

· He reviewed the regulatory landscape and identified the four main investigation types: internal employees, vendor, third party fraud and insurance.

· Preventing elder abuse and exploitation is becoming a higher priority for financial institutions.

· The online environment offers many opportunities for fraud and criminal activity. It is often difficult to investigate and prosecute cyber crimes.

· Best practices for protecting yourself from cyber crimes.

Following the keynote speech, all new LOMA designees were recognized and congratulated for their important achievements. Each designee received a pin associated with their designation and a rose. The 2011 Scholarship winner, Kelsey Wegner, was also recognized during the awards presentation.

As part of the Society's continuing charitable activities, donations were collected for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. The mission of the Foundation Fighting Blindness is to drive the research that will provide preventions, treatments and cures for people affected by retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, and the entire spectrum of retinal degenerative diseases.

The LOMA Society of the Twin Cities considered the Fall Recognition Dinner to be a great success! The Society's next event is a Social Networking Happy Hour, which will be held March 6, 2012.
